A killer application or a killer app is a program, operation system, game or any type of software becoming so popular with the users that they are ready to spend their money on a device or software that is necessary for such popular program to run. In other words, a killer application is an application so cool that makes you want to buy the device that this app is working on. It may be considered one of the various marketing tricks for manufacturers of both software and hardware. Such apps may be, for example, computer games or operation systems forcing people to buy better and more powerful computers. Creating a killer app is not easy and sometimes immense resources are needed to create something that will really make a device or a piece of software so desirable.
The development of mobile computing technologies like mobile telephones, smartphones and PDA's which are simplified computers by nature (they too have microprocessors, memory storage devices etc.) killer apps are also being developed for them. Although manufacturing of mobile devices is a branch of industry only few hi-tech giants can afford, there are already a lot of big competitors on the market and the competition is extremely high.
