3G services: Online shopping
Imagine that you have a time machine and you've decided to go back in history to, say, the year of 1980. Then suddenly your time machine breaks and you need about one year to fix it. Most probably you would have a hard time accommodating yourself to the realities of the past.
If you could go back in time you would probably be astonished at how drastically the world has changed during the last 30 years. The new technologies have done wonders, and while using them on a daily basis we don't even realize how greatly they have changed the world and how the humankind could exist without them.
One of such services is online shopping, the feature that allows us buy products and services by just typing the web address of the store we want to make our purchase at, and choosing the product itself. Really, internet has done wonders lately. In 1980's in order to buy a book or a pair of new shoes you needed to go to a brick-and-mortar store and the procedure of buying could take the whole day or even two, because while shopping you sometimes need to compare the existing alternatives, prices, try things on etc. Of course, today you can do the same, but the new internet technologies have greatly changed the whole concept of buying. The matter is our precious time. The more hectic our life gets, the less time we have for everything except our job. That's why online stores are so popular today. They save your time, money, give you the whole picture of what you're interested in, and let you buy everything without the need to leave your favourite sofa in your living room. All you need is a credit card and the desire to buy, everything else is there for you. Today people can buy everything online, from books and CD's to car trucks and industrial equipment. Amazing, isn't it? The only negative aspect of it is the laziness such internet stores cultivate in us.
Another step in the development of online retail sale is the introduction of new mobile technologies called 3G (third generation). The term implies several new standards that have been accepted by the leading mobile carriers in the world. These standards allow subscribers to use high-speed broadband internet connection with the help of a mobile device like a phone, a smartphone or a PDA. Of course there were other technologies like GPRS before, allowing users to log on to internet stores from their handsets, but the process was a lot slower and more complicated because the devices were not as advanced as they are now. And the process still goes on – we cannot even imagine what the world will be like in a few years.
The advantages of the third generation technology together with the possibilities of online retail stores are evident. For example, imagine yourself hurrying in a car to some place and you don't want to be late. Then suddenly you see a suit in a shop window that you have been dreaming about but couldn't find anywhere. What could you do in this situation 30 years ago? You could go to the store and be late for the event you were hurrying to or you could come back to that store later wasting your precious time. Today you can simply log on to the website of the store with the help of your 3G-enabled gadget and order it without leaving your car. And by the time you get back home the suit can already be delivered right to your door.
