3G services: Online dating

With the advent of new standards of mobile telecommunications providing incredibly fast speeds of data transfer the existing popular services like mobile dating are experiencing their regeneration.

Mobile dating, sometimes called cell phone dating is a mobile service provided by the operators and enabling people to socialize, i.e. chat, meet and even get involved in a relationship. Mobile dating as we know it now, or better to say have known it up to the present moment, was a rather limited version of online socializing and dating services. The limitation was dictated by the nature of the mobile technology, and more precisely by the speed of the wireless data transfer. This means that users willing to find new friend, or maybe even a lover, are not able to fully express themselves via the mobile technology. The major difference between online dating and mobile dating is that mobile dating mostly uses text messaging as the major means of communication between its subscribers. Of course, online socializing websites are much more advanced offering various types of services like text messaging, real time chatting, video conferences, ability to post photos, videos and so on. If you don't like a user you can simply ban him and not receive his or her messages any more.

So, like we've already said before, mobile messaging as the basis for mobile dating services can be called a very simplified version of online dating, although many believe it to be a huge leap in the development of digital socializing technologies.

The next step of the second generation mobile dating is the development of improved online capabilities of mobile phones together with creation of new technologies "outside" the phone enabling faster speeds of packet data transmission. We are talking about GPRS as a supplement to the GSM network, as well as its successor EDGE (which is a lot faster than GPRS, that's why it's often referred to as 2.5G, emphasizing its better quality). These improved technologies of data transfer enabled users to use somewhat simplified copies of dating websites, which intentionally create mobile versions of their websites so that users do not need to wait ages for the website to download on their mobile phone or a PDA.

The third generation of mobile dating comes with the development of 3G mobile networks. Creation of new mobile handsets with better characteristics and equipped with better quality cameras allows users not only to communicate with their friends and dates online via their gadgets, but also shoot photos and videos and upload them right away onto the dating websites. Now mobile dating becomes a real alternative to usual online dating with the help of a computer, although the functionality of mobile dating is somewhat restricted by the size of mobile devices and their interfaces - you simply need more time for typing a message if you have a telephone without a full QWERTY keyboard. But this restriction may be considered temporary as new models of mobile phones are being constantly introduced having greater functionality, having, for example, multitouch displays or even able to connect with external devices like keyboards or mice.
